How Can You Tell When You Are a True Martial Artist? In recent articles I've asked some unusual questions about the martial arts and about the dojos, particularly in America, where they're taught.Are dojos cults?How much is "enough" martial arts training?Should we eliminate the belt system of promotion in martial arts?And what can you do if your martial arts academy suddenly shutters its doors or is forced out of operation?I'd like to pose an equally provocative question:How can you tell when you're a true martial artist?I raise this because I'm increasingly convinced seeking the approval and endorsement of outside authorities, while commonplace and customary, is something that leads us away from self-discovery and true wisdom.A martial artist is several things, as I see it:(1) It is a person who can handle the "force" that life presents to him, in whatever forms that force takes. The overbearing boss or spouse, the renegade teenage kids, and the bully down the street are all adversaries, and the martial artist learns how to manage these influences by doing as little direct harm to them, and to himself, as possible.(2) It is a person who is capable of defending himself and others when the situation offers no alternative. Aristotle, in his book, The Rhetoric, said we wouldn't think much of a man who could defend himself with his hands but not with his words. Now, some two thousand years later, we can invert that statement and say we can't think much of a person who is glib but physically vulnerable to attack.(3) It is a person who values peace and finds no joy in war, though he may constantly strive for alertness and readiness, should the latter occur.(4) It is a person who knows that life itself and the world around us are our dojos, that training may begin in a confined, highly supervised space, but its proper province is timeless and without physical boundaries.(5) It is a virtuous person, one that strives to do the right thing, and when mediating a dispute asks: "What is right?" instead of the politically correct question: "Who is right?"Do you need a dojo to certify you as a genuine martial artist?I don't think so.Then, who is to say who is a true martial artist?As with so many of life's important questions, the answer lies within.Dr. Gary S.
